Good news for cancer sufferers, as scientists at the University of Huddersfield have announced they are working on a method of eliminating hair loss as a side effect of chemotherapy.
Their research combines scalp cooling (which has already been proven to reduce hair loss in 50% of cases) with a specially formulated shampoo applied directly to the scalp.
A new Scalp Cooling Research Centre has been established within the university, aiming to conduct clinical trials within the next five years.
Racoon’s consultant trichologist Iain Sallis says: “The cooling cap method works by narrowing the blood vessels and preventing the chemotherapy drugs from passing into the hair root. Success depends on the dose of the drug and whether other drugs are given simultaneously, but the success rate is improving all the time.
